This Main Idea and Details unit includes digital mini-lessons and student activities on Google Slides that teach students to identify the main topic of an informational text, locate supporting key details, and retell the details in sequence. Great for Kindergarten Common Core Standards for Reading, SPED, and ESOL students.
Created for distance learning and interactive lessons on Google Slides for use in Google Classroom, but can be easily downloaded from your Google Drive as a PowerPoint file.

Main Idea and Details Mini-Lessons
Six (6) scaffolded lessons build up to mastery of the following foundational reading concepts.
- Main Idea / Main Topic: Identify the main topic of a text.
- Key Details: Identify details to support the main idea of a text.
- Retelling: Retell the key details of a text in order.
Lessons are created for distance learning, but would also be a fun and engaging way to use technology to enhance lessons in the traditional classroom using an interactive whiteboard.

- What’s It All About? (4 pg): Name the topic of a group of objects.
- Sort Out the Details (4 pg): Support the main idea with details.
- Main Idea Match (3 pg): Support the main idea with details.
- Read the Clues (3 pg): Name the main idea of a text using supporting details.
- Support the Main Idea (5 pg): Support the main idea with details. Write to retell the details.
- Tell Me About It (2 pg): Retell the key details of a text in order.
- Reading Passages (5 pg): Fluently read grade-level texts. Name the main idea and retell key details in order.
Teacher Tips
- Accessing the Google Slides: Your download will include a PDF with links to the Google Slides. When prompted, click “Make a Copy” to save to your Google Drive.
- Creating an Assignment: When assigning the activities, first make a copy of the slide deck. Then, remove any slides you do NOT want assigned.
- Personalize the Lessons: Check out videos on YouTube for steps to add your voice-over to the lesson slides so YOU can be the one teaching your students. It’s super easy to do and is a great way to personalize your distance learning lessons!
