Retelling Stories
This Retelling Stories unit teaches students how to retell familiar stories using sequenced details from the text. Students learn how to retell key details in sequence from classic stories, rhymes, and fairy tales. Great for Kindergarten Common Core Standards for Reading, SPED, and ESOL students.
Created for distance learning and interactive lessons on Google Slides for use in Google Classroom, but can be easily downloaded from your Google Drive as a PowerPoint file.

Retelling Stories Mini-Lessons
Six (6) scaffolded lessons build up to mastery of the following foundational reading concepts.
- What is Retelling?: I can explain what retelling is.
- Retell a Story: I can retell details from the stories I read.
- The Retelling Hand: I can retell stories in order.
- Retell Jack and Jill: I can retell stories in order.
- Write to Retell: I can write details in order when retelling.
- Retell the Three Little Pigs: I can retell stories by writing events in order.
Lessons are created for distance learning, but would also be a fun and engaging way to use technology to enhance lessons in the traditional classroom using an interactive whiteboard.
Retelling Stories Student Activities
- Sequence Stories (2 pages): Put events in order to make a story that makes sense.
- Order & Write (5 pages): Write about events in order.
- Retell a Story (2 pages): Write to retell stories using details.
- Retelling Chart (2 pages): Graphic organizer to use with any story.
- Reading Passages (5 pages): Kindergarten level reading passages
Teacher Tips
- Accessing the Google Slides: Your download will include a PDF with links to the Google Slides. When prompted, click “Make a Copy” to save to your Google Drive.
- Creating an Assignment: When assigning the activities, first make a copy of the slide deck. Then, remove any slides you do NOT want assigned.
- Personalize the Lessons: Check out videos on YouTube for steps to add your voice-over to the lesson slides so YOU can be the one teaching your students. It’s super easy to do and is a great way to personalize your distance learning lessons!
