Kindergarten Reading Strategies
This Kindergarten Reading Strategies unit teaches students how to read new or challenging words in texts. Strategies taught include pictures or visual aids, phonics or sounding it out, looking for familiar parts or word families, and using other words in the sentence or context clues to read and comprehend new words in the texts they read. Great for Kindergarten Common Core Standards for Reading, SPED, and ESOL students.
Created for distance learning and interactive lessons on Google Slides for use in Google Classroom, but can be easily downloaded from your Google Drive as a PowerPoint file.

Reading Strategies Mini-Lessons
Four (4) lessons teach various reading strategies to help new or struggling readers read.
- Read the Pictures: Students learn to look at pictures for clues for new or missing words.
- Sound it Out: Students learn to use letter sounds to sound out new words, pay special attention to the first and last letter sounds.
- Word Families: Students learn to look for familiar parts in words to read new words.
- Other Words: Students learn to use other words in the sentence as the context for figuring out a new or missing word.
Lessons are created for distance learning, but would also be a fun and engaging way to use technology to enhance lessons in the traditional classroom using an interactive whiteboard.
Reading Strategies Student Activities
- Picture This: Use a picture to fill in the missing CVC word in a sentence.
- Say & Match: Match the correct picture cards to the sentences.
- Is That Right?: Sort CVC word picture cards into spelled correctly or misspelled.
- CVC Spell it: Spell the CVC word that matches the picture.
- You Tell Me: Cloze sentences with one missing word written with letter boxes (CVC or sight words).
- Cloze Reading Passages: Cloze passage to fill in 6 missing words. There is a passage for CVC words, Fry’s first 100 sight words, and K/1 vocabulary.
Teacher Tips
- Accessing the Google Slides: Your download will include a PDF with links to the Google Slides. When prompted, click “Make a Copy” to save to your Google Drive.
- Creating an Assignment: When assigning the activities, first make a copy of the slide deck. Then, remove any slides you do NOT want assigned.
- Personalize the Lessons: Check out videos on YouTube for steps to add your voice-over to the lesson slides so YOU can be the one teaching your students. It’s super easy to do and is a great way to personalize your distance learning lessons!
