This Fiction vs Nonfiction unit teaches students to identify story elements and informational text elements to distinguish between fiction and nonfiction texts. Great for Kindergarten Common Core Standards for Reading, SPED, and ESOL students.
Created for distance learning and interactive lessons on Google Slides for use in Google Classroom, but can be easily downloaded from your Google Drive as a PowerPoint file.

Fiction vs. Nonfiction Mini-Lessons
Six (6) scaffolded lessons build up to mastery of the following foundational reading concepts.
- Types of Texts: Introduction to fiction and nonfiction.
- Fiction Texts: Define and practice describing elements of fiction.
- Nonfiction Texts: Define and practice describing elements of non-fiction.
- Fiction or Nonfiction?: Practice differentiating between fiction and nonfiction.
- Reading Fiction: Students receive Story Elements spiral review to reinforce the elements of fiction.
- Reading Nonfiction: Students receive Main Idea spiral review to reinforce the elements of nonfiction.
Lessons are created for distance learning, but would also be a fun and engaging way to use technology to enhance lessons in the traditional classroom using an interactive whiteboard.

- Fiction & Nonfiction (2 pages): Tell the difference between fiction and nonfiction texts.
- Real or Fake? (2 pages): Tell the difference between what is real and what is fake.

- Retelling Rope (1 page): Story elements graphic organizer that can be used with any fiction text.
- Main Idea Table (1 page): Main idea graphic organizer that can be used with any nonfiction text.
- Reading Passages (5 pages): Kindergarten reading levels with skill-based questions. Includes vocabulary visual aids.
Teacher Tips
- Accessing the Google Slides: Your download will include a PDF with links to the Google Slides. When prompted, click “Make a Copy” to save to your Google Drive.
- Creating an Assignment: When assigning the activities, first make a copy of the slide deck. Then, remove any slides you do NOT want assigned.
- Personalize the Lessons: Check out videos on YouTube for steps to add your voice-over to the lesson slides so YOU can be the one teaching your students. It’s super easy to do and is a great way to personalize your distance learning lessons!
